Academic Deferment

Students on Academic Notice will be placed on Academic Deferment in the following term if both the overall combined GPA is below 2.00 AND the term GPA is below 2.00. Institutional GPA will be considered before any student is deferred. If the Institutional GPA is at or above a 2.00, the student will remain on Academic Notice.

Students on Academic Deferment can apply for readmission only after the following minimum periods: 

  1. First Academic Deferment: One regular semester (fall or spring).
  2. Second Academic Deferment: One calendar year. 

Process for Returning to the University of Memphis

Students who wish to return after Academic Deferment must follow the appropriate process based on the length of time they have been away from the University:

  • Students returning after one regular semester: Students who have been away for one regular semester (fall or spring) do not need to submit an application for readmission. They must contact their academic advisor to communicate their intent to re-enroll. The academic advisor will contact the Center for Academic Success & Achievement (CASA), Academic Coaching & Support Services, to initiate the process for lifting any applicable holds.
  • Students returning after one calendar year or more: Students who have been away from the University for one year or longer must submit an application for readmission through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions reviews and processes readmission applications for returning students. Coursework completed at another accredited college or university may be considered in determining eligibility for readmission.

Academic Coaching Requirements

Students returning to the University following Academic Deferment must meet with an Academic Coaching Strategist a minimum of six times throughout the semester and follow all requirements established by Academic Coaching & Support Services.

Readmit Requirements 

In addition to the requirements above, readmitted students will need to attend one ACS Readmits Orientation. A scheduling link will be sent to your UofM email address to sign up.
