Kate Ayers

Program Director, St. Jude

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Educational Psychology and Research
Current Title: Program Director, St. Jude

Why did you choose the University of Memphis for your studies?

I chose the University of Memphis because I was collaborating with a STEM education researcher there who introduced me to qualitative research. Wanting to deepen my understanding, I followed her recommendation to join the EDPR program.

What’s a favorite or meaningful memory from your time here?

One of my most meaningful memories was taking the in-person feminist theories course with Dr. Nordstrom. The discussions challenged me to think critically about the theoretical foundations of my work and gave me a sense of community during a mostly virtual program.

How did your experience at UofM prepare or shape you for the work you do now?

The program helped me develop a strong theoretical foundation for understanding science identity development, which is central to my current work supporting students in building their science identities.
