UofM business college starts $30M renovation project

Monday, 02 March 2026
A University of Memphis college is beginning a multimillion-dollar renovation.
The Fogelman College of Business and Economics (FCBE) at the UofM held a “wall-breaking” ceremony last week to mark the start of its renovation.
The $30 million first phase of the project covers the renovation of the existing FCBE buildings. The university filed a permit for the renovation in November.
Phase I is partially covered by a $25 million grant to the UofM from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. The State approved that grant for the FCBE renovation in May 2022. The remaining $5 million is being fulfilled by fundraising and donor support.
In 2023, the UofM announced the $90 million Fogelman College modernization project. The FCBE’s existing 57-year-old space sits on the corner of Central Avenue and Patterson Street.
Once the existing two buildings are renovated, a third building will be built on the land between them. The new site will be called the Avron and Robert Fogelman Business Complex.
Flintco is the general contractor on the project. The architects are Memphis-based 4FDesign and Birmingham-based Williams Blackstock Architects.
FCBE dean Bobby Garrett said a separate groundbreaking ceremony will take place when construction begins on the new buildings.
Flintco is set to begin the 365-day building contract in the next week, Garrett said.
“With so much support from the community and from the donors who made this project happen, it really just represents growth for Memphis as a city on all levels,” Garrett said. “We're really proud about being able to offer better technology, better facilities, better classrooms, and enhanced pedagogies for all of our students, and it gives us space to grow.”
