Fun, Local, Must-Do Summer Events in Memphis

There are so many benefits to being a graduate student at the University of Memphis. In addition to a top-tier education, its location is also a huge perk! The city of Memphis is a hub of robust culture, rich history, creativity, diversity, amazing food, music, sports, nature, and so much more!

There’s always an array of things to do and explore so we’ve listed a few for the month of July! Enjoy!!

#1. The 4th of July & Fireworks

The I Love Memphis Blog has a great list of Fourth of July festivities in the area!! Their blog is a wonderful, year round event resource. 

 

#2. Experience the summer rooftop parties!

The famous Parties at the Pyramid, and the Peabody Hotel, are just a few of the cool, local spots that offer dedicated rooftop parties during the summer! There’s always great music, DJs, food, drinks, and wonderful views!

When you just want to catch a great view, dinner, and a vibe, spots like Beck & Call, Hu Hotel, and Tiger & Peacock have amazing rooftops for you to enjoy!

These are all great options for hanging out with friends, date night, networking, etc.

 

#3. Soak up the concerts and live music in July

From Alicia Keys, ZZ Top, Future and Friends, Erykah Badu, Brothers Osborne, and many more, there’s music for everyone!

#4. Take a photo at the popular “MEMPHIS” sign!

Located at the top of Mud Island, the vibrant Memphis sign is a great photo op and provides a wonderful view of the Memphis skyline.

 

#5. Shop local at Farmers Markets

Farmers Markets are popular in Memphis! There’s the Memphis Farmers Market, the Cooper Young Community Farmers Market, and several others! They offer everything from fruits, vegetables, meats, candles, baked goods, flowers, art, pet goods, and so much more!

#6. Test your general knowledge at Trivia Nights

How well do you know history, music, Disney, movies, Harry Potter, Ted Lasso, etc.? Local trivia nights are always happening all over Memphis. Grab your friends and bring your appetite.

#7. Canoes & Cocktails at Shelby Farms

Canoes and Cocktails happens each Friday between April and September. It’s a great way to paddle around the lake and enjoy food, drinks and games.

The Memphis Summer Cocktail Festival (July 14th) is another great opportunity to taste refreshing summer drinks.

 

#8. Drive-in and Summer Movies, Anyone?

The local Malco Summer Drive-In is a great way to watch new blockbuster hits and classics from the comfort of your own vehicle.

#9. Attend & Participate at Comedy Clubs & Open Mics

Whether you want to showcase your comedic talents or just want a good laugh, there’s a place for you! Check out places like High Cotton Comedy Club, Bert Kreischer’s Fully Loaded Comedy Festival (July 8th), or even Live Open Mic Comedy at Hitone.

 

#10. Ready to Swing Dance & take Salsa Lessons

The popular Rumba Room on South Main is a great place to learn swing dance and salsa lessons! The instructor, music, and environment are fun, electric, and welcoming!
