Why Choose the University of Memphis

With an average class size of 18.5 students, the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis isn't just a group of students; it's a tight-knit community whose focus is supporting each other and discovering new ways to push engineering sciences further.

Our 10 research centers, like the Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research, the Center for Transportation Innovations in Education and Research and the Center for Earthquake Research and Information, take information learned in the classroom and apply it to real-world problems, striving to create a safer world for all, be it by ensuring quality drinking water or preventing electronic vehicles from being hacked.

The Herff College of Engineering also has strong connections with industry leaders who have a history of providing internships and jobs to international students.

Your associate's degree transfers into any of our engineering fields, including biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering and civil engineering. And for non-traditional engineering students, those credits also transfer directly into the Polytechnic@UofM, a department devoted to teaching real-world skills like applied AI, construction leadership, manufacturing supervision, information technology, organizational leadership, commercial aviation and aviation management.

Wherever your future leads, you'll be on the right path the second you step foot onto the Herff College of Engineering campus.

Memphis

Leave Campus, Explore Memphis

When you're not on campus, you'll have plenty to do and see around Memphis.

Stop by Beale Street on any day to see world-class Blues and pay tribute to the origins of Rock music by visiting Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, the Rock 'n' Soul Museum or by touring Sun Studios, which launched the careers of icons like Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Enjoy world-renowned barbecue at dozens of restaurants across the city, but save energy to see some of the biggest names in music at annual festivals like RiverBeat Music Festival and Mempho Music Festival.

You'll also be able to see breathtaking concerts at the FedExForum, where you can also watch the Memphis Grizzlies and Memphis Tigers basketball teams battle it out on the hardwood.

Of course, Memphis isn't short on engineering marvels either. With two bridges that span the Mississippi River and connect the United States, Memphis is a major center for transportation. That's why companies like FedEx call Memphis their home and why so much cargo goes through the Memphis International Airport. You can also learn the design concepts behind the 10th largest pyramid in the world, settled right along the Mississippi River. Not far from that pyramid, you'll see some of the recent construction done at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, construction done by Memphis-based company Flintco. Other Memphis companies like Medtronic shape the future of medical devices through biomedical engineering.

And all of those companies are powered by Memphis, Light, Gas and Water, the largest three-service municipal utility in the United States, which serves more than 430,000 customers across 783 square miles.

No matter where you go throughout our city, you'll be surrounded by engineering innovation, culture and some of the best food the world has to offer.
