HanYuDr. Han Yu, Director & Assistant Professor | Department of Economics, FCBE

Dr. Han Yu specializes in applied microeconomics. His works focus on health economics, labor economics, the economics of education, and the economics of culture. Another line of his research addresses issues related to subjective well-being. His recent works focus on the broad impact of public health policies, including Medicaid and Medical Marijuana Laws, on crime rates, education, and the labor market. His work has been reported by the Wall Street Journal, the Economists, the National Public Radio, and cited by the New York City Bar Association’s report to the Biden-Harris Administration, among others. Before joining the University of Memphis, Dr. Han Yu obtained his Ph.D. in Economics at Louisiana State University. He also holds a Master’s degree in finance and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. HuigangLiangDr. Huigang Liang, Professor | FedEx Chair of Excellence in MIS, FCBE

Huigang Liang received his M.S. degree in computer science and his Ph.D. degree in healthcare information systems from Auburn University. His research interests include socio-behavioral, managerial and strategic information technology issues at both individual and organizational levels in a variety of contexts. His work has appeared in MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of MIS, Journal of AIS, MIT Sloan Management Review, Communications of the ACM, Decision Support Systems, Information Systems Journal and Journal of Strategic Information Systems, among others. His research has been funded by grants from NIH, FedEx and Sloan Foundation. He has served as associate editor for MISQ and is currently senior editor for JAIS and associate editor for ISR and Information & Management. Read more >

WilliamSmithDr. William T. Smith, Chair & Professor | Department of Economics, FCBE

Dr. William T. Smith is a Professor in, and Chair of, the Department of Economics at the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, The University of Memphis. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1987. His research has focused upon economic growth, consumption behavior and investment behavior, choice under uncertainty, and asset pricing. Albert A. Okunade, Ph.D., is Economics Professor and faculty affiliate at the Center for Community Health (School of Public Health), and the African & African American Studies Program (Interdisciplinary Studies) at the University of Memphis. He Coordinates the Ph.D. Economics program, teaches Graduate healthcare and pharmaceutical economics courses, and supervises Ph. D. Dissertations in Applied Microeconomics including Health care. His research honors include Suzanne Downs-Palmer Professorship, First Horizon Professorship, Superior Performance in University Research (SPUR) and the University’s Distinguished Research awards. Dr. Jhacova Williams is an applied microeconomist focusing primarily on economic history and cultural economics. She is an assistant professor at American University in the Department of Public Administration and Policy. Her previous work has examined Southern culture and the extent to which historical events have impacted the political behavior and economic outcomes of Southern Black Americans. Recent examples include historical lynchings and the political participation of Blacks; and Confederate symbols and Black-White labor market differentials. She has also done a series of projects investigating the role of structural racism in shaping racial economic disparities in labor markets. Prior to joining American University, she worked at Xavier University of Louisiana, Clemson University, the Economic Policy Institute, and the RAND Corporation. Read more >

Dr. Grace Arnold is an applied microeconomist with an emphasis on labor and health economics. The overarching goal of her research is to understand how public policy influences individual behavior and outcomes. Specifically, she uses quasi-experimental techniques to tease out a policy's intended and unintended causal effects. Identifying plausible causal estimates of a policy's intentional and unintentional impact is crucial to evaluate a program's costs and benefits accurately. Dr. Erkmen Giray Aslim is an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Seidman College of Business at Grand Valley State University. He has an extensive academic background, having held faculty positions at Minerva Schools at KGI, Claremont Colleges, and a postdoctoral research associate position in the Private Enterprise Research Center at Texas A&M University. Additionally, Dr. Aslim has contributed as a member of the advisory board for the Electronic Health Economics Colloquium, a collaboration with the American Society of Health Economists. Dr. Aslim specializes in applied microeconomics, with a primary focus on health economics, labor economics, and public economics. His research delves into the effects of public health insurance on labor market dynamics, health outcomes, and criminal behavior. Recently, he has been investigating the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on access to healthcare, as well as exploring the relationship between vaccination efforts and food insecurity. His scholarly contributions have been recognized and featured in esteemed media outlets including Freakonomics, M.D., TIME, Yahoo News, and The Nation, among others. Read more >
