A Heart for Nursing, A Passion for Students: Dr. Angela Oigbokie’s Lasting Impact at LCON
At the Loewenberg College of Nursing, excellence in nursing education is shaped by faculty who not only teach the science of nursing, but also embody its compassion, leadership, and service. Among those leaders is Dr. Angela Oigbokie, affectionately known as Dr. O. Dr. Oigbokie is a clinical associate professor who was recently promoted to Clinical Professor, with the official title beginning in September 2026.
Dr. Oigbokie began her journey with LCON in 2014 as a part-time instructor before transitioning to a full-time role in nursing academia in 2015. Since then, she has established herself as a well-known and respected figure in undergraduate teaching courses, including Pharmacology, Gerontological Nursing, Community Health Practicum, Health Assessment Lab, Gerontology Practicum, and Teach-Learn-Coach (TLC) in Pharmacology for first-semester nursing students. Currently, she primarily teaches in the graduate program, sharing her expertise across various concentrations, such as Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Education, and Nursing Leadership.
A certified family nurse practitioner, Dr. Oigbokie brings years of diverse clinical experience into the classroom, having worked in critical care, occupational health, public health, and long-term care. Her ability to connect real-world nursing practice with academic instruction has made her a trusted mentor and advocate for aspiring nurses.
“Her courses are about more than just passing,” Dr. Oigbokie often reminds her students. “It’s about developing a healthy mindset and becoming a successful nurse.”
That philosophy has become a cornerstone of her teaching approach. Students frequently describe Dr. Oigbokie as compassionate, encouraging, and deeply invested in their growth, not only academically, but personally and professionally. She views nursing education as a ministry, intentionally modeling empathy, leadership, and confidence-building for every student she encounters.
In addition to her teaching, Dr. Oigbokie continues to expand her impact through scholarship and research. Her research interests include helping first-semester nursing students successfully navigate the challenges of nursing school and exploring how nutrition education can improve health outcomes in rural, food-insecure communities and food deserts. Her commitment to advancing nursing knowledge reflects her passion for addressing both educational and community health disparities.
Dr. Jill Dapremont recently recognized Dr. Oigbokie for her outstanding contributions to scholarship, teaching, leadership, and community engagement. Since becoming a full-time faculty member, Dr. Oigbokie has remained highly active in professional development and academic service. In 2025, she delivered a refereed podium presentation and presented a poster at a professional nursing conference. She is currently a co-author of an upcoming scholarly manuscript, a co-developer of a community health improvement initiative, and a co-author and co-editor for the second edition of a textbook on Women's Health in Primary Care.
Her mentorship also extends beyond the classroom. Dr. Oigbokie has worked closely with graduate students, including serving as a content expert for a Master of Public Health capstone project focused on the impact of social determinants of health on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
A dedicated servant leader, Dr. Oigbokie has held vice-presidential leadership roles within Sigma Beta Theta at-Large for the University of Memphis from 2021–2023 and 2023–2026. In 2025, she was nominated and inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. She has also contributed to student scholarship initiatives through her involvement with the UofM Annual Student Research Forum and as a faculty judge for the LCON Scholarly & Academic Achievement Showcase.
Outside of her university work, Dr. Oigbokie is dedicated to improving health outcomes in the community through outreach initiatives. One such effort is the Community Outreach Men’s Health Fair held at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, where she offered health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
Her educational journey reflects the same commitment to lifelong learning that she encourages in her students. Dr. Oigbokie earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Union University, a Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Business Administration in Health Care Management from University of Phoenix, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Delta State University.
Outside of nursing, Dr. Oigbokie enjoys spending time with her husband and their three children. Whether singing, reading, or enjoying family moments, she values the balance between professional purpose and personal joy.
Through her passion for education, dedication to scholarship, and commitment to serving others, Dr. Angela Oigbokie continues to exemplify the mission and values of LCON. Her influence reaches far beyond the classroom, helping shape confident, compassionate nurses who are prepared to make a difference in healthcare and in the lives of those they serve.
