Dr. Jeremy N. Whittaker Honored at Tennessee State Capitol for Impact in Education

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 13, 2026) — Dr. Jeremy N. Whittaker, Associate Dean of Student Success and Graduate Professor at the University of Memphis Loewenberg College of Nursing (LCON), has been recognized as a distinguished honoree at the Tennessee Black Male Educators Recognition Ceremony held at the Tennessee State Capitol.
The recognition, presented by State Representative Torrey C. Harris (District 91, Shelby County), celebrates Dr. Whittaker’s unwavering commitment to student success, his leadership in higher education, and his lasting impact on students and communities across Tennessee.
Dr. Whittaker was formally honored on the floor of the Tennessee General Assembly during a ceremony at the Cordell Hull Building on Monday, April 13, 2026, where a select group of educators from across the state were recognized for their role in shaping future generations. The event highlighted the critical influence of Black male educators as mentors, leaders, and pillars of excellence within both academic institutions and the broader community.
In an official statement accompanying the recognition, Representative Harris emphasized that Dr. Whittaker’s work extends far beyond the classroom, impacting lives through leadership, mentorship, and a deep commitment to advancing educational outcomes. His contributions at the Loewenberg College of Nursing have played a significant role in strengthening student support systems, fostering academic success, and empowering future healthcare professionals.
As Associate Dean for Student Success, Dr. Whittaker has been instrumental in driving
initiatives that enhance retention, progression, and overall student achievement.
During his tenure at the Loewenberg College of Nursing, he has spearheaded transformative
efforts that have strengthened the college’s wraparound support culture and elevated
the student experience. From the creation of the virtual one-stop student support
center, the “LCON Scrub Hub,” to the expansion of registered student organizations,
the development of the LCON Brand Shop and online store to enhance college identity
and engagement, increased enrollment, improved student success outcomes, and stronger
post-graduate placement rates across undergraduate and graduate programs, his impact
has been both substantial and measurable.
While Dr. Whittaker often credits the outstanding and unwavering support of the team he works alongside each day, his leadership has undeniably shaped a culture of excellence, belonging, and student-centered support; ensuring that students are equipped not only to succeed academically, but also to lead confidently within the healthcare workforce.
