From Law Enforcement to Nursing: A Journey of Purpose and Passion

February 27, 2025

Patrick Arden

For Loewenberg College of Nursing (LCON) student Patrick Arden, the path to nursing began in an unexpected place—law enforcement. Driven by a deep desire for stability and a meaningful career, this N2 student made the bold transition, inspired largely by the birth of their daughter.

“I would say that the thing that influenced me to switch careers the most was having my daughter,” Patrick shared. “She’s the reason I left law enforcement, to begin with, and she’s one of the big reasons for wanting to go into nursing. I want to have a stable career to provide for her.”

Transitioning from a profession rooted in structure and enforcement to one centered on care and compassion was not without its challenges. “The biggest adjustment has been shifting my mindset. In law enforcement, your role is to enforce the rules. In nursing, it’s about providing care and support. It’s a completely different way of interacting with people.”

Despite the challenges, Patrick has thrived in the rigorous nursing program, balancing the demands of coursework, clinicals, and being a full-time father. His dedication to academic success has set

him apart, proving that perseverance and purpose can fuel even the most demanding journeys.

Patrick chose the University of Memphis nursing program for its reputation and the support it offers students. “LCON has lived up to its name. The faculty and my peers have been incredibly

supportive, and I couldn’t have made a better choice.”

As he continues to excel in his studies, Patrick remains focused on his long-term goal: making a difference in people’s lives. “The driving force behind my decision to become a nurse is simple

—I want to help people. And at the end of the day, I get to go to sleep knowing I did something that truly mattered.”

Beyond his studies, Patrick finds strength in his family and the camaraderie of his nursing cohort. “Seeing how proud my family is and the close bonds I’ve formed with my classmates reassures me that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”

Looking ahead, Patrick is particularly drawn to mental health nursing, believing it’s where he can make the greatest impact. “I feel like that’s where I’m meant to be—helping people when they need it most.”

For those considering a career change, Patrick’s advice is simple: “Go for it. Even if it doesn’t work out, that’s better than not knowing what could’ve happened or feeling like you missed out.”

Like all of our Memphis nursing students, Patrick’s story is a testament to the power of purpose, resilience, and the drive to make a meaningful impact—both for family and for the patients they will one day serve.
