Farewell to Dr. Larry Slater: Reflecting on a Legacy of Dedication and Impact

The Loewenberg College of Nursing bids farewell to Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Clinical Professor Larry Z. Slater, PhD, MAc, RN-BC, CNE, FAAN. Dr. Slater has been appointed dean of the School of Nursing at Quinnipiac and will begin his new role on June 26.

Since joining LCON in 2021, Dr. Slater has been an integral part of the nursing leadership team, serving as interim Dean, developing and implementing a new undergraduate nursing curriculum, leading efforts to increase student retention and success rates, expanding partnerships with healthcare facilities in the community, enhancing the use of technology in the classroom and clinical settings, and supporting faculty development and engagement.

Dr. Larry Slater's remarkable tenure as an influential figure within the University of Memphis nursing program has left an indelible mark on the faculty, staff, and students. As an esteemed educator, mentor, and researcher, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of nursing education, instilling a norm for excellence, and guiding countless aspiring nurses by providing guidance, encouragement, and expert knowledge.

“It has been a tremendous honor to work with the faculty, staff, and students at LCON and the U of M. The whole team worked so hard together to continue the college's legacy of excellence during my tenure. I was able to learn and grow from everyone that I had the privilege of working with. These are lessons I will take with me throughout the rest of my career. I will miss my LCON colleagues and wish the college much future success," stated Dr. Larry Slater.

As LCON bids farewell to Dr. Slater, the college expresses its deepest gratitude for his unwavering dedication and the positive influence he has had on the U of M nursing community. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will remain an inspiration as LCON continues to strive for excellence and innovation in nursing education.

LCON’s executive committee has begun identifying a new Associate Dean for Academic Programs to ensure a smooth transition of leadership in this critical role.  Dr. Bradley Harrell has been appointed interim Associate Dean and will remain in this role while the excutive leadership committee works with a search firm to do a national search to identify the next Associate Dean for Academic Programs.
