Communication Tools

Use the Inbox. The Inbox is a messaging tool used to communicate with a course, a group, an individual student, or a group of students. You can use the Inbox to communicate with others in your course. Use the Inbox to:

  • Send a message to someone in your course or group.
  • Send a message to yourself (displays in your Sent folder).
  • Reply to messages from others in your course.
  • Filter conversations by course or type.
  • View and reply to assignment submission comments.

In the Inbox, you can send a message to one user or multiple users in a course. In Global Navigation, click the Inbox link. Click the Compose icon. In the Course drop-down menu , select the course where you want to send your message. Search for the user in the To field. Alternatively, you can locate and select a user by clicking the Course Roster button. To search for a user, type the user's name in the To field. Select the user's name from the list. To send a message to multiple users, add names of the users in the To field. You can send an individual message to each recipient by clicking the Send an individual message to each recipient checkbox. In the subject line field, enter a subject line for your message. In the message field, type your message. All content is sent in plain text. URLs included in a message automatically become clickable links after the message is sent. To include an attachment or media file, click the Attachment or Media File buttons. Canvas makes it easy to reply to messages from other users in your Inbox. In Global Navigation, click the Inbox link. Click the Conversation you want to respond to. Click the Reply icon in the message header, or hover over the timestamp and click the Reply icon within the message. You can also click the Reply icon in the toolbar. Type your reply in the message field. You can attach a file or media. When you are ready, click the Send button.  Review this link to learn more.

Note: If there is more than one recipient, you can reply-all to the conversation and everyone included will see your reply.

When you are part of a group conversation, you can privately respond to another individual. In Global Navigation, click the Inbox link. Select the conversation. Locate the individual you want to send a private message to. Hover your mouse under the timestamp until you see the Reply icon. Type a message in the message field. Open the Inbox. In Global Navigation, click the Inbox link. Select the conversation. Click the Options icon and then click the Delete option. Click the OK button to delete the message. For more information on this topic, click here.

Note: You can only delete your copy of the message. You cannot delete the message for all recipients. You can only select one message to delete at a time.

You can delete conversations from your Inbox when you no longer need them. In Global Navigation, click the Inbox link. Select the conversation. To select multiple messages to delete, click the message checkbox or press the command key (Mac) or the control key (Windows) while clicking each message you want to select.
