Internship Start Dates

Students who have completed all program requirements may be cleared to begin their internships on or after the 15th day of classes during the fall or spring semesters.

During the fall and spring semesters, students must enroll in classes at the UofM to qualify for MHIP. Students' enrollment status will be checked before the 15th day of classes. Students who are not enrolled in classes during the internship semester will be removed from the program and will not qualify for the internship grant.

Students interning during the summer must be registered for classes in the upcoming fall semester. Before beginning their internships, fall registration must be confirmed. Upon confirmation of fall registration, students will receive a start date for their summer internship.

Required MHIP Activities

NOTE: While students are encouraged to take an internship course through their academic department, the College of Arts & Sciences, or the Career Services department, receiving academic credit is not required for the Mellon Humanities Internship Program.

The activities below are REQUIRED of all Mellon Interns and may be in addition to the requirements of any internship course the intern may take.

  • MHIP Onboarding. Before reporting to their internship sites, students must complete the 6-hour MHIP Onboarding activities. This will be completed during the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters and over a two-day period in May or June for summer interns. Interns will be paid for completing these activities, which will include both virtual and in-person components.
  • Check-Ins. Throughout the internship experience, interns will have regular check-ins with their Internship Coordinator and the MHIP Career Readiness Specialist. Students are responsible for following up on any outreach from these Mellon team members and completing these periodic check-ins.
  • Professional & Personal Development Sessions. All interns are required to attend at least one session during the semester/term they are interning. The schedule for these sessions will be provided to the cohort by the Career Readiness Specialist.
  • Self-Evaluations. An intended outcome of the internship experience is that students will demonstrate the Career Readiness Competencies, equipping them to transition successfully into and thrive in the workplace. Students will complete mid-term and final evaluations of their proficiency in each of the Career Readiness Competencies.
  • Reflection Activity. At the end of the semester/term, Mellon interns will be required to submit an Internship Reflection to their Internship Coordinator.
