About Dr. Murphy

Dr. Murphy graduated with his Doctorate in Counseling Education and Supervision from Auburn University in 2018.  He is currently an Assistant Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Research. He has multiple years of experience teaching both undergraduate and graduate counseling on topics such as group counseling, foundations of counseling, and multicultural counseling.

Dr. Murphy is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Mental Health Service Provider in Tennessee. He has worked a clinician for 11 years including working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This has included work with addiction, co-occurring disorders, and severe mental illness. Working extensively with adults experiencing trauma, PTSD and serve cognitive disorders. With an additional experience providing career counseling for undergraduates.

Dr. Murphy pursues research in a wide range of topics with focus primarily on counselor training and supervision, especially around multicultural competencies with a focus on intersections of identities. Additional research interest includes engaging with veterans/military personal with counseling and crisis intervention. Previous publications and presentations have also included research on suicide prevention and models of supervision.
