TVA Regional Meeting and Annual Conference Hosted by FCBE Instructor

For release: December 4, 2015

Nap Overton, instructor of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (FIR), co-hosted the regional meeting and annual conference for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Investment Challenge last month. Conference attendees included representatives from TVA, a keynote speaker from PIMCO, as well as investment management teams from other universities such as the University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee at Martin, and Union University.

Student teams from each school made presentations about how they managed their portfolios, which averaged about a half of a million dollars of real money. Fogelman students in FIR 4331 and FIR 6331 stock portfolio management courses taught by Professor Overton used in-depth analysis using Bloomberg data to pick their investments.

The conference included a tour of the Cook Analytics and Trading Lab located at the Fogelman College of Business & Economics. The tour was led by Dr. P. K. Jain, interim chairman of FIR Department, and graduate student, Kevin Moss. Remarkably, the TVA student teams in aggregate have beaten the S&P 500 index return by 50 basis points per year on average during the 17 years since program's inception.
