Launch Distance Grades 6-8

Governed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Contact Info:  jheadley@memphis.edu

In this competition, the teams should construct a device made from popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and ½ inch craft cubes capable of launching a 20mm diameter rubber bouncy ball. You may also use small cups (link found in resources) to hold the ball for launching if you need to. The objective is to launch your ball the furthest out of 3 attempts. The teams will launch the balls, and the distance shall be measured from the front edge of the device before launching to the center of the ball by the judges. There are no constraints on the dimensions and construction of the launching device other than that it must be able to launch the 20 mm ball in all three attempts without breaking any parts. The team with the greatest launch distance will win the competition.
