Composition Applicants
Students who wish to major in Composition must upload with their application any musical work they have written. It can be for any instrumentation, any style (classical, pop, rock, rap...) and any length. There can be one or more. It must be in pdf format, whether it is generated with hand writing, Finale, Sibelius or any other application. If there is an mp3 recording, of any quality, that should be uploaded also. If the work is not notated, and only an mp3 recording is available, that should also be shared. All of these files can be uploaded to your application via Acceptd.
Upon admittance to the School of Music, with the goal of pursuing a degree in Composition, the student must complete several courses to be fully accepted into Composition. These are listed below.
- Audition and acceptance by applied faculty on an instrument or voice (Audition requirements can be found here.)
- Complete Music Theory I and Ear-training I with a C- or better
- Complete Class Piano I with a C- or better
- Complete Beginning Composition (MUTC 2501)
- Complete two semesters of Composition MUTC 2502

Until an applicant has achieved the above, he or she is not considered to be fully accepted into the Composition program. Prospective students who have a portfolio of written, or possibly published and recorded pieces ready for presentation prior to audition, are encouraged to make an appointment with Composition faculty for portfolio review.
