Healthy Baby, Healthy Future: Maternal Health Digital Support Circles

Abstract

Healthy Baby, Healthy Future is a community-driven initiative designed to address Shelby County’s persistently high infant mortality rates, which disproportionately affect Black mothers and families. Many pregnant and postpartum individuals experience isolation, limited access to trustworthy maternal health information, and significant digital health literacy gaps. These barriers hinder their ability to navigate prenatal care, understand nutrition and mental health needs, and effectively use tele-health or insurance resources.

This project introduces virtual Maternal Health Digital Support Circles—safe, informal online gatherings hosted via Zoom or social media platforms. Co-led by public health professionals, nurses, and trained peer mentors, the circles will provide space for participants to ask questions anonymously, learn about prenatal and postpartum wellness, build digital confidence, and receive referrals to local maternal health services. Each session will be paired with a tailored digital resource packet, including accessible handouts on breastfeeding, mental health, and navigating care systems.

Over six months, the project will launch partnerships with local maternal health organizations, host 4 to 6 virtual circles, and collect participant feedback to shape a sustainable, replicable model. With community partners such as the Shelby County Maternal Health Taskforce, and others, the initiative aims to engage at least 40 participants, reduce feelings of isolation, strengthen peer-to-peer support, and increase confidence in using digital health tools. Ultimately, Healthy Baby, Healthy Future seeks to empower mothers with knowledge, connection, and equitable access to maternal health resources.
