NSF's Funding for Underrepresented Communities

Breaking barriers in space careers by providing funding to improve diversity in the workforce

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a Dear Colleague Letter for Supplemental Funding for Space Related Preparation and Awareness for Career Equity (SPACE) that will improve diversity in the workforce through space-related research, research and development, or educational activities.

Supplemental funding requests should clearly detail how the request offers a unique opportunity for preparing the space workforce of the future and indicate how one or both of the following goals are met:

  1. Awareness – To increase awareness of space related career opportunities in communities underrepresented in the space workforce by increasing participation of under-engaged communities, institutions, and geographic regions.
  2. Preparation – To increase preparation and enhance capacity throughout the nation, in support of a diverse space workforce through activities and projects that include but are not limited to faculty development, formal education, informal education, and community-based activities.

To learn more about this funding and how to submit a supplemental funding request, reference the NSF Dear Colleague Letter here.
