Enhanced Internet2 Connectivity to Support Research

Stronger, Faster, Smarter: UofM upgrades research network infrastructure

Beginning July 1, 2025, the University of Memphis will upgrade its Internet2 connection to better support the needs of its research community. The University will transition its connection to Southern Crossroads (SoX), a major Internet2 connector in the Southeast that links institutions such as Vanderbilt University, the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Auburn, and others across the region.

This change brings two key benefits:

  • Increased Reliability: UofM will move from a single 100 Gbps connection to two geographically diverse 100 Gbps connections, offering a redundant path to reduce service disruptions like the recent fiber cut incident.
  • Improved Performance: The dual connection will double our bandwidth, enhancing daily performance for data-intensive research and collaborative projects.

No action is required by researchers, and no downtime is anticipated during the transition. This infrastructure enhancement underscores UofM’s commitment to providing reliable, high-performance connectivity for its growing research enterprise.
