Types of Service

Impact Types in Volunteer Odyssey

In Volunteer Odyssey, the term impact is used as an umbrella term to describe all potential types of community service engagement. While all impact types can be tracked in Volunteer Odyssey, only Time Impacts can be verified by the Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism for scholarships, campus organizations, or service medallions.

  • Time- Time spent directly or indirectly serving with a local nonprofit/community organization that meets a community need.
    • When logging hours, only include time actively serving. Time should not include time spent on breaks, eating, or sleeping.
  • Money- Funds donated to organizations that meet a community need (ex. $10 donated to St. Jude).
  • Goods- Items donated to organizations that help meet a community need (ex. donated school supplies).
  • Research- Gathering and presenting information on an issue that directly benefits the community, not only yourself (ex. work in a lab researching the effects of climate change).
  • Training- Time spent being trained to work with an organization.
  • Voted- Track the elections in which you have voted (ex. local, state, national).

Please note that the decision to count or not count an opportunity for service hours ultimately rests with the Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism. If you have questions about if an opportunity will count as service or if you need to know how to add a service opportunity that is not already on Volunteer Odyssey, please contact us at service@memphis.edu or 901.678.5575.
