Message from the Director

On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, I would like to welcome you to the School of Social Work at the University of Memphis. Great things are happening in the School!

Our faculty is nationally and internationally recognized for their scholarship in social work and social welfare. Our research projects and centers bring in over $1 million annual in external funding and make a significant impact on the Memphis and greater Midsouth community. Three of our faculty have been honored with the University of Memphis Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Award, and two of our faculty have been honored as University of Memphis Principal Investigator Millionaires.

Our academic programs prepare students for excellence in generalist and specialized practice. Our Bachelor of Arts in Social Work prepares students for generalist practice at the University of Memphis main campus and the Lambuth campus. Our Master of Social Work (MSW) program prepares students for advanced practice across all systems.  Our curriculum prepares students to utilize evidence-based, ethically informed social work practices with a variety of populations while at the same time tailoring the program through electives and certificates to fit the students' specific needs.  Our MSW program is ranked in the top one hundred by US News & World Report, and our advanced standing MSW track is available fully online. Both our BA and MSW programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Our Graduate Certificate in School Social Work is offered fully online to current MSW students and graduates of MSW programs. Our Doctor of Social Work (DSW) launched Fall 2020 and is offered fully online. The DSW program will prepare social workers to be leaders in evaluation, research, and social work management.

Our School is engaged in providing educational opportunities to the community. Each year, the School of Social Work holds a symposium bringing together practitioners, scholars, and students to address issues of significance to social workers. We also sponsor additional community events such as the Opioid Summit and Hope in Action.

Please browse our website to learn more about our academic programs, faculty, and research. If you need additional information or would like to visit the School, please contact us at socialworkinfo@memphis.edu or 901-678-2616.

Sincerely,

Susan Neely-Barnes
