Undergraduate Advising

The College of Education provides academic advising for the following undergraduate programs in the Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership. Students pursuing teacher licensure should also review the admission requirements for the teacher preparation program through the Office of Teacher Education and Clinical Practice.

The Teacher Education Office advises the following ICL undergraduate majors. For teacher licensure positions, visit our Office of Teacher Education and Clinical Practice (OTECP) to view admission requirements to our teacher prep program.

Preparing for Advising

All forms are for undergraduate students in the College of Education. Directions for using each form as well as using the DocuSign program are below.

Change of Major Request Form

Undergraduate students wanting to declare a major in the College of Education may use the form above to request a major change. By submitting this form, you are giving consent for the College of Education to change your major. Students may also indicate if they would like to add or drop a minor. Once your form has been submitted, you will be contacted by the undergraduate academic advisor. Please allow three to five business day for changes to be made to your UMdegree.

If you are a COE licensure-track major (Teaching All Learners Human Development and Learning or Secondary Math) switching to become an Educational Careers (non-licensure) major, please use the Integrative Studies: Educational Careers Change of major form >.

Add/Drop Minor Request Form

Undergraduate College of Education students wanting to add or drop a minor but not change their major may fill out the form above. By submitting this form, you are giving consent for the College of Education to add or drop your minor. Once your form has been submitted, you will be contacted by the undergraduate academic advisor. Please allow 3-5 business days for changes to be made to your UofM degree.

If you cannot access Navigate or you do not see your advisor listed, please contact OTECP. Be sure to email us from your UofM email address and provide your UUID number in the email.

Undergraduate Teaching Licensure

Undergraduate Teaching Licensure is available in the following areas:

  • Early Childhood (Pre-K–3)
  • Elementary Education (K–5)
  • English as a Second Language (Pre-K–12)
  • Instrumental Music (K–12)
  • Interventionist (6–12, Special Education Modified)
  • Interventionist (K–8, Special Education Modified)
  • Mathematics (6–12)
  • Physical Education (K–12)
  • Visual Arts (K–12)
  • Vocal/General Music (K–12)

Practitioner (Initial) Teaching License

The Practitioner (Initial) Teaching License is issued to candidates who have successfully completed the Residency Year or the Clinical Teaching Semester. The following information will be presented to candidates at the end of their respective programs.

Undergraduate candidates applying for a Tennessee Teaching License must:
  • Have completed all teacher licensure coursework prescribed on your degree sheet.
  • Have a successful edTPA score.
  • Have a conferred Bachelor's degree official transcript is required prior to applying. 
  • Complete the Initial and Add-On Endorsement Teaching License Form> 
  • Confirm that all of your Praxis II test scores were sent to The University of Memphis (code: 1459) and the Tennessee Department of Education (code: 8190). NOTE: The last four digits of your SSN must appear on your score report.

  • To look up classes, please follow the instructions provided by the Registrar under "Class Offerings." (Class schedules are available online, usually one month before registration opens.)
