Dr. Richard Bloomer, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, recently joined WREG’s Live at 9 to discuss the importance of staying hydrated and to provide practical guidance for maintaining proper fluid intake.

During the interview, Dr. Bloomer explained that hydration does not need to be complicated. Most people simply need to drink water regularly throughout the day and keep fluids nearby. General guidelines suggest about three liters of fluids per day for men and about two liters per day for women, although needs can vary depending on body size, activity level, and how much fluid is lost through sweat.

Dr. Bloomer noted that hydration is essential for several key functions in the body, including blood pressure regulation, temperature control, and the movement of nutrients through the bloodstream. When the body becomes dehydrated, electrolyte imbalances can occur, which may affect nerve signaling, muscle contraction, and even heart function.

The segment also addressed the growing popularity of electrolyte powders and sports drinks. Dr. Bloomer explained that most people working in office or indoor environments typically do not need electrolyte replacement products and can stay well hydrated with water and other common beverages.

However, individuals who lose large amounts of fluid through sweat, such as athletes or outdoor workers like construction crews and roofers, may benefit from electrolyte drinks during long periods of intense activity or heat exposure. He also noted that milk can be an effective rehydration beverage because it naturally contains carbohydrates, protein, and electrolytes.

Dr. Bloomer encouraged people to pay attention to common signs of dehydration, including thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. Maintaining regular fluid intake throughout the day can help prevent these symptoms and support overall health.
