Award-winning scholar and educator expands impact across the University of Memphis and beyond through the Ascend Series

Tuesday, 10 February 2026 - Award-winning scholar and educator expands impact across the University of Memphis and beyond through the Ascend Series

From national research recognition to cross-campus collaboration, Dr. Jamie Brunsdon is driving new approaches to education focused on human flourishing and character development.

Dr. Jamie Brunsdon continues to push the University of Memphis mission of “Ascend” into new avenues of access for students, faculty and the broader community. Through the Ascend Series, Brunsdon brings together colleges across campus, creating a collaborative platform rooted in his background in psychology and pedagogy. The series connects academic insight with real-world application, offering specialized groups—particularly educators—practical strategies to develop key character traits and unlock success in themselves and others.

That work is reinforced by national recognition. Brunsdon, assistant professor in the University of Memphis College of Health Sciences, has been awarded the 2026 Exemplary Paper of the Year Award from the American Educational Research Association’s Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education (SIG 93). His paper, “Human Flourishing as the Aim of Physical Education?” challenges conventional thinking—positioning physical education not just as movement and skill development, but as a pathway to moral, mental and social well-being. Selected through a rigorous peer-review process, the research underscores the powerful role education can play in shaping well-rounded, thriving individuals.

Building on this philosophy, the Ascend Series also incorporates perspectives from leading community impact professionals, including Bret Bartholomew, to deliver a dynamic, interdisciplinary experience. By aligning research, cross-campus collaboration and external expertise, the initiative equips participants with actionable tools to foster growth in their own environments. As it continues to expand, the Ascend Series stands as a clear example of how the University of Memphis is translating research into impact—advancing not only academic success, but human flourishing at scale.
