About Samantha Calhoun

Ms. Samantha Calhoun is a clinical assistant professor who has been on the faculty of the Loewenberg College of Nursing (LCON) since 2017. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (2013) and Master of Science in Nursing with a Concentration in Adult Health Nursing Education (2017) from LCON. Her nursing experience is in cardiac and progressive care, and she is currently studying for her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Science at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, TN.

Professor Calhoun teaches Foundational Nursing Skills and Nursing of the Adult I/Practicum in the undergraduate program and serves as a member of the NCLEX Task Force, Student Affairs Committee, and Teach-Learn-Coach (TLC) faculty for N2 students. Her professional memberships include American Nurses Association/Tennessee Nurses Association and Beta Theta-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, where she serves as the counselor for LCON.

Her research interests include African American men, chronic kidney disease management, quality of life, social determinants of mental and physical health, health disparities, and community based participatory research. Her dissertation will focus on assessing the knowledge of CKD and exploring the perceptions of risk factors for CKD in African American men with multiple morbidities.

Professor Calhoun is passionate about student success. She holds her responsibility as an educator in high esteem. She is intentional about modeling passion, compassion, and leadership to her students. As a millennial, she doesn’t take this lightly! Her overall goal is to inspire future nurses to never compromise showing respect, showing kindness, showing compassion, and most importantly; advocating for patients (clients). Her advice for nursing students is: “We all make mistakes, so don’t be afraid to give it your all and try. You will gain much more from your experiences by not being afraid of getting it wrong sometimes. At the end of every skills evaluation, exam, dosage exam, or simulation lies a patient who needs you to truly give it your all; this includes learning from your mistakes and correcting them.”

Professor Calhoun’s hobbies include spending time with her husband, best friend, and college sweetheart Jeremy, binge-watching shows on Netflix, and reading.
