Works in Progress Symposium (WIPS)

The Works in Progress Symposium (WIPS) provides undergraduates with an opportunity to share their research with peers as well as professors. Undergraduates who have conducted original research, scholarly, or creative projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor are invited to submit an application to WIPS. This symposium also welcomes presentations by students who are just beginning projects, and affords students the opportunity to present the background, rationale, plans and preliminary results from a project that is ongoing, rather than complete.

Present at WIPS

  • Students prepare a fifteen minute oral presentation with Power Point, which will be followed by an additional five minute question and answer session with the faculty reviewer and audience. 
  • Presentations will be judged using the following rubric: WIPS Presentation Rubric

Presentation Categories

Students give an oral presentation in one of the following categories. 

  • Business
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Liberal and Fine Arts
  • Life and Health Sciences
  • Math and Computer Sciences
  • Physical and Applied Sciences
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences 

Prizes for each category:

1st place ($200)
2nd ($150)

Student Research Forum (SRF)

The University of Memphis Student Research Forum, open only to students enrolled at the University of Memphis, is an annual event which showcases the diverse research of undergraduate and graduate students. The purpose is to provide an outlet for students matriculating at the University of Memphis to present their research to a panel of faculty judges in their respective disciplines. This forum enables students to develop their presentation skills and present their research in a formal, supportive environment.

Present at SRF

    • Posters MUST BE set up between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. IT IS UP TO THE STUDENT TO PROVIDE AND INSTALL THE TRI-FOLD POSTER (dimensions, 36 x48 inches flat, 36 x24 inches folded). 
    • When you arrive, register, pick up your name tage and packet. 
    • Look for the you assigned table number and set up your TRIFOLD POSTER.
    • Judging begins at 10:00 am or 2:00 pm (please check the schedule for details). 
    • Please be present for judges to talk with you.

UofM Lambuth Student Symposium 

The Student Symposium is a forum where any undergraduate student may present their original work in a manner appropriate to their discipline. This may include creative work, experimental research, analytical papers, or another type of work appropriate to your discipline. Work will be presented in either a 15-minute oral/live session or a research poster/visual arts session. Completed work, work in progress, and proposals are welcome.

Poster & Visual Arts Guidelines

  • A tri-fold table-top presentation board with clips will be provided for anyone presenting in this category. If you have work that is not appropriate for this board, please email Lam_undergradresearch@live.memphis.edu to discuss presentation needs. 
  • Include the work’s title, author name(s), and school affiliation.
  • Includ the work's title, author name(s), and school affiliation on your presentation.
  • Use a university-approved logo on a research poster.
  • Be prepared for friendly conversation and questions about your work.
  • As this is a formal event, wear professional attire and use professional behavior.
  • Consult your faculty advisor for guidance on assembling a poster or presenting visual art.

Oral & Live Session Presentation Guidelines 

  • Oral or live session presenters will have up to 15 minutes to present their work.
  • Projection equipment will be provided if you choose to use it.
  • A microphone will also be provided.
  • Be prepared for friendly conversation and questions about your work.
  • As this is a formal event, wear professional attire and use professional behavior.
  • Consult your faculty advisor for guidance on this presentation.

Additional Notes

  • Students may submit work as individual authors or as part of a team of student co-authors.
  • Submissions will undergo a review by a panel of faculty.  The panel reserves the right to reject any submissions that do not meet the guidelines.
  • The title and author(s) will appear EXACTLY as they are typed in your submission. Please double check punctuation and spelling before submitting.
  • Students are expected to work with a faculty mentor to ensure that the abstract and subsequent presentation is appropriately written for the academic discipline.
  • If accepted, students are expected to make arrangements to be available for their presentation time on their assigned date.
