Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree program leads toward a master’s degree and a Tennessee teaching license. For candidates that hold a master’s or doctorate, you may enroll as a Graduate Non-Degree seeking student. Apply for Graduate Admissions here>

Program requirements for admission into the MAT Program: 

2.75 and up GPA Requirements:

  • Candidates are not required to take the Praxis exam for entrance into the MAT program.

2.5-2.74 GPA Requirements:

  • You must take and pass the Praxis CORE Academics Skills for Educators (CORE) Writing Exam with a score of 162.
  • You must obtain a 3.0 GPA on the first semester of MAT coursework and maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program.
     

2.25-2.49 GPA Requirements:

  • You must take and pass the Praxis CORE Academics Skills for Educators (CORE) Writing Exam with a score of 162.
  • Submit the EDA recommendation form > completed by a former instructor or employer.
  • You must obtain a 3.0 GPA on the first semester of MAT coursework and maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program.

Graduate Students TEP Admissions

All graduate students pursuing a teacher license must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) by the end of their first semester in order to move forward to restricted courses. Not being admitted to TEP at the appropriate time could result in delaying graduation and/or not meeting certification requirements. Candidates with degrees in the following content areas: English, math, science, history or world languages will not be required to take or pass Praxis Content exams.
