UofM Study Abroad Credit Transfer Policy
Faculty-Taught Programs
Students participating in a faculty-taught study abroad program will enroll in the companion course(s) with the CRN provided by the faculty leader before the program. Students must enroll in the companion course adhering to the standard enrollment period of the University of Memphis for the term the program takes place.
Students participating in the TNCIS program will receive special instructions from the University of Memphis Study Abroad Office.
Community members participating in a UofM faculty-led program must enroll in a Professional/Continuing Education course.
Non Faculty-Taught Programs
Students participating in a semester or short-term study abroad program that is not taught by a UofM faculty member must follow the following procedure for obtaining transfer credits.
Undergraduate Students
Before Departure:
- Students obtain course descriptions of all the courses they plan to enroll in at the
host institution and have them translated into English, if necessary.
- Take course descriptions and the Transfer Credit Request Form to Ms. Dionne Ballinger (dbllnger@memphis.edu) in the Undergraduate Admissions Office,
Room 201 Wilder Tower Building, to determine course equivalents.
- Undergraduate students take the course descriptions and the transfer credit request
form to their academic and/or faculty advisor to obtain their signature on the Transfer
Credit Request Form.
- Students take course descriptions and transfer credit request to the graduation analyst of their college for approval.
During the study abroad program:
- Students should keep all documents relating to the courses from the host institution
abroad, including syllabi, reading lists, papers, returned examinations, evaluations,
and notes from each class.
- If students do not obtain approvals before departure because course information was
not available, they can start the approval process via email after registering with
the host institution.
- Students should request the host institution transcript be mailed to the University
of Memphis Study Abroad Office after completing the study abroad program:

After returning from the study abroad program:
- The Study Abroad Office notifies students once official host institution transcripts
have arrived. It could take one to six months for a transcript to arrive at the University
of Memphis.
- After students confirm the transcript is correct, they are given a copy. The Study Abroad Office then forwards the transcript to the Undergraduate Admissions Office to complete the transfer process. Undergraduate students are advised to meet with Ms. Dru Welch (dwelch@memphis.edu) in the Undergraduate Admissions Office, Room 201 Wilder Tower Building, to ensure the transfer process is complete. If any course changes occurred while abroad, students must complete an updated Transfer Credit Request Form following the process stated above.
Please note: After completing the transfer process, students' official UofM transcript will reflect that a student studied abroad, the time frame, how many credits earned, and the grades received. Students cannot request "pass/fail" for the credits earned while studying abroad. Letter grades from study abroad programs will transfer as letter grades to their Memphis transcript and impact the GPA.
Students applying to graduate or professional school should keep in mind that the original transcripts from your study abroad program may be required for the application process. Students should contact the Study Abroad Office well in advance of the application deadline in regards to requesting an official transcript.
Graduate Students
Before Departure:
- It is strongly recommended that students have a conversation with their academic advisor
to learn which classes they need yet to graduate so that students can select appropriate
courses and/or program.
- Students obtain course descriptions of all the courses they plan to enroll in at the
host institution and have them translated into English, if necessary.
- Graduate students will submit the completed Master's Credit Transfer Form or Doctoral Credit Transfer Form to the Graduate School Graduate Analyst (gsgraduateanalyst@memphis.edu), FedEx Institute of Technology building, Suite 201.
During the study abroad program:
- Students should keep all documents relating to the courses from the host institution

Please allow 2 - 7 days for the credits to post to your UofM transcript.
