Abstract
The HEALTH Initiative (Health Evaluation And Liability Trimming Hub) is a campus-based preventive health project designed to promote early disease detection, reduce long-term health and financial burdens, and strengthen community well-being at the University of Memphis. Many chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity develop silently and remain undiagnosed until complications arise. With chronic diseases affecting U.S. adults and disproportionately impacting low-income communities, accessible and affordable screening opportunities are urgently needed. The HEALTH Hub addresses this gap by establishing a weekly screening and health assessment station operated by trained volunteers.
Through free blood pressure checks, random glucose testing, BMI measurement, and structured surveys on lifestyle and health history, the project aims to screen approximately 100 students, staff, and nearby residents. Participants will receive a unique HEALTH ID code enabling secure, anonymized tracking of their results. Individuals with abnormal findings can be referred to the University Health Center or the Shelby County Health Department for timely follow-up care. All collected data will be anonymous and will contribute to a broader understanding of campus health trends and help in future public health planning.
The initiative should serve as proof-of-concept to evaluate feasibility, participation, satisfaction, and potential for scaling into a permanent health resource. By fostering early prevention, supporting experiential learning, and strengthening community health systems, the HEALTH Initiative aligns closely with the goals of PH CARES Changemakers. Expected outcomes include two formal reports, a final presentation, and actionable recommendations for expanding sustainable health monitoring programs across campus and beyond.
