Living Their Reality: Experiential Learning for Empathy and Empowerment of People with Disabilities in the U.S.

Abstract

“Living Their Reality: Experiential Learning for Empathy and Empowerment of People with Disabilities in the U.S.” aims to address the persistent social, emotional, physical, and policy-level barriers experienced by people with disabilities, despite advancements such as the ADA. This project proposes an immersive, experiential learning model that shifts disability education from theoretical understanding to lived experience. Through structured simulations, such as wearing blackout goggles to experience temporary blindness, using a wheelchair across campus to understand mobility challenges, or navigating communication with earplugs to simulate hearing impairment, students gain firsthand insight into daily barriers faced by individuals with disabilities. These activities will be conducted in a safe, supervised environment with guided reflection and debriefing to translate personal experience into meaningful public health understanding.

The initiative envisions this experiential module as a credit-based requirement within public health and related academic programs, beginning at the University of Memphis. By walking “a day in their shoes,” students develop empathy and a deeper appreciation for the resilience of disabled individuals ,something no textbook alone can teach. The project also highlights broader public health implications, including the importance of preventive oral healthcare, disaster preparedness for vulnerable populations, and mental health support for caregivers. These insights help to make more compassionate, inclusive, and realistic policy-making and professional practice.

Grounded in both academic purpose and personal motivation, this initiative strives to cultivate a generation of health professionals who feel before they act. By fostering understanding through lived experience, this project hopes to make empathy a core competency within public health education and practice.
