Abstract
Dance for life: Structured Dance intervention to promote mental health wellbeing among older adults of Memphis city.
Depression, anxiety, and cognitive disorders are major contributors to declining mental health among older adults in the United States. Age-related factors such as loneliness, social isolation, loss of partners, chronic illness, pain, reduced mobility, and declining functional ability further increase vulnerability and reduce quality of life. As the older adult population continues to grow rapidly, there is an urgent need for interventions that support mental and emotional well-being.
Physical activity is a well-established protective factor for mental health, reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing cognitive function. These benefits are further amplified when combined with music and group-based activities such as dance.
This project “Dance for Life” is a structured, evidence-informed, culturally tailored dance and music intervention designed for older adults living in nursing homes in Memphis. The program integrates physical, cognitive, and social components to achieve three primary goals: stress reduction, improved cognitive performance, and increased social connectedness. The methodology follows a three-part protocol: (1) low-to-moderate intensity cardio-based dance movements paired with rhythmic music to promote stress relief and physiological activation; (2) memory-evoking choreography using familiar music to stimulate cognitive processing, recall, and coordination; and (3) group-based routines requiring synchronization and teamwork to strengthen social bonds.
Expected outcomes include improved mood, reduced stress, enhanced cognitive engagement, and increased social connectedness. Program evaluation incorporates pre- and post-intervention assessments alongside independent interviews to capture participants’ experiences and assess feasibility, acceptability, and fidelity. “Dance for Life" aims to support mental health and emotional well-being while promoting enjoyable and sustainable physical activity among older adults in long-term care settings.
