Workforce and Capacity Building Activities

Partnerships in Action
In partnership with the Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) and Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), the University of Memphis School of Public Health’s Center for Public Health Informatics, Data, Education, Analytics Systems hosts six initiatves for the Memphis community to engage in:

Elementary School Public Health Clubs
In partnership with Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) PH-IDEAS works to strengthen the public health workforce pipeline by increasing the public health knowledge and interest of MSCS elementary students through public health clubs.
Middle School, Public Health Clubs
In partnership with Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) PH-IDEAS works to strengthen the public health workforce pipeline by increasing the public health knowledge and interest of MSCS middle school students through public health clubs.


High School Experiential Learning Program
In partnership with MSCS and the Memphis Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., to strengthen the Public Health workforce pipeline by preparing ten high school students annually, via a 240-hour hybrid program to pursue careers in Public Health after post-secondary school graduation.
Dual Enrollment Graduation Pathway
Offering high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to complete the Public Health Dual Enrollment college and career pathway to earn 18 hours of free UofM college credit during high school through the state-funded Dual Enrollment scholarship.


Population Health Data Analytics Program
In partnership with CodeCrew, PH-IDEAS works to strengthen the Public Health workforce pipeline by preparing four undergraduate Public Health students during their junior and senior years to collect, analyze and disseminate Public Health Data.
SCHD Public Health Graduate Scholars
In partnership with SCHD, PH-IDEAS works to strengthen the public health workforce pipeline, retain current Public Health workers and enhance the public health competencies of current SCHD workers by providing full scholarships and stipends to school for 18 current SCHD staff to obtain graduate certificates and degress in Public Health, while maintaining employment at SCHD.


Community Workshops
In partnership with six local, grassroot agencies, PH-IDEAS hosts quarterly workshops to increase community trust in the SCHD and the UofM SPH to increase empathy in the SCHD front-line managers for their Shelby County clients.
