Student Appeals

The University has developed the following processes for students to appeal charges applied to their accounts.

A $200 late fee is applied to student accounts that are not paid by the original fee payment deadline for the term. This includes all students that register on or after the first day of the term. If there were unforseen circumstances that led to the late payment and/or late registration, an appeal may be submitted.  USBS staff will review and a decision will be made within 30 days.

You may appeal any citation received at the Parking Office at 120 Zach Curlin Parking Garage. For your convenience, student appeals can also be filed online in TigerPark. Student Appeals are heard by the Student Government's Association. Faculty/Staff Appeals are heard by the Faculty/Staff Appeal Committee. Visitor Appeals are heard by the Parking Office Manager.

Appeals for University Traffic Fines are processed through TigerPark on your MyMemphis Portal.

Appeals related to Residence Life financial matters must be submitted by the student within one year of the term in which the fee was made.  Appeals should be filed with the office of Residence Life by emailing housing@memphis.edu  The decision of the appeal will be emailed to the student within 1-2 weeks.

To receive a tuition and/or fee refund, appeals must be submitted by the student within one year of the term in which the fee assessment was made. There are no exceptions to this timeframe. In order to receive a refund of any amount, the student must first be withdrawn/dropped from the course(s) in question.  To learn more about how to withdrawal from a course and file an appeal, click here

If you have already withdrawn/dropped from the course and are appealing the charges remaining, please submit an appeal using the following link: Submit an Appeal

An Appeals Committee made up of multi-departmental constituents throughout campus will review each appeal and supplemental documentation to determine if the appeal will be granted or denied. Decisions made by the Appeals Committee will be considered the final decision of the University.

To further strengthen our refund policy, we encourage students to enroll in GradGuard's Tuition Insurance.  To learn more about GradGuard Tuition Insurance at https://gradguard.com/tuition/Memphis.

Appeal for refund based on Death in Family, Employer Conflict, and Medical Situation: The exception rule for medical refunds provides a normal refund up to 75% of the fees.  If a student would, under our normal time and percentage schedule receive less than 75%, we may approve an exception to bring the total to 75%.  These refunds are handled the
same as all other refunds, including determining if any part of the
refund must be returned to federal sources.

Appeal for refund based on Advising Error: Students requesting a refund of registration fees due to an advising error must submit an appeal online and attach a memo on University letterhead or email from the advisor with a detailed account of the situation that led to the student's incorrectly being enrolled in a course. Students requesting a refund of late fees due to an advising error must submit a memo on University letterhead or email from the
advisor with a detailed account of the circumstances that prevented the student from fulfilling registration/fee payment obligations by the appropriate deadline.

Appeal for refund based on Military Call to Active Duty: Pursuant to TCA 49-7-2301 and 49-7-2302, students called to active military or National Guard service during the semester are entitled to a 100% refund or credit of mandatory fees.  Housing and meal ticket
charges may be prorated based upon usage. Students requesting a refund of registration fees due to a call to active military duty must supply the USBS Office a copy of the official military
orders.  Once received, the USBS Office will process a 100% credit for all courses from which the student must withdraw due to military service. Students who receive Title IV funding are subject to any Title IV credits prior to the USBS Office processing the remaining credits to
total 100% of mandatory fees.
