Language Placement and Credit
Placement Testing Information
Placement tests are available on a walk-in basis for French, German, and Spanish.
Please Note: You must arrive at least one hour before the Language Media Center closes to begin any placement exam. Results are provided immediately upon completion of the exam. The placement test is online and multiple-choice and covers basic vocabulary, grammar, and reading knowledge. The test takes approximately 30-40 minutes to complete.
A student may not attempt the placement exam in any language more than twice. In addition, a student may not take the placement exam more than once in a given week.
If you need to be assessed in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, or Latin, please contact the Department of World Languages and Literatures at email@example.com.
Students may also email firstname.lastname@example.org to set up the placement test if they are unable to come to campus.
Credit by Examination
The department does not normally award credit by examination for languages taught in the department.
Students with competency in languages not taught in the department may be able to take a credit by examination exam through the FLATS program run by Brigham Young University, for which our department is an approved proctor. More information can be found at: https://flats.byu.edu/. The department can also proctor exams offered by New York University: https://www.sps.nyu.edu/professional-pathways/proficiency-testing.html.
The University of Memphis does offer the CLEP exam through the Testing Center. This exam allows student the option for credit by examination in French, German, and Spanish.
