UofM Graduate School Advisory Board Member: Owen Keith
Owen Keith – Partner and Wealth Manager at Creative Planning. I work with families
to create and maintain a customized financial plan addressing all aspects of a strong
financial life, including investments, tax planning, risk management, retirement,
and estate planning.
Educational Background:
- BBA – University of Memphis, Risk Management and Insurance, 1995
- MBA – University of Memphis, 2009
- Certified Financial Planner™, as designated by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards
Professional Experience:
Several years ago, I was named partner of my former investment advisory firm (before being acquired by Creative Planning) Telarray. My perspective began to change on the work I was doing. It was always important that I achieve success for the benefit of our clients. But at that point, that responsibility expanded to my fellow partners and co-workers. My efforts determined their success as well.
What excites you most about serving on the UofM Graduate School Advisory Board?
I am very excited about this opportunity to serve on the UofM Graduate School Advisory Board because it will give me the chance to reconnect with the school that was instrumental in setting the foundation for any success I’ve had in my career. And it allows me to share some of my career experiences, both positive and negative, with future Graduate School alums.
What do you see as one of the most important opportunities for graduate students today?
Graduate students today have an abundance of opportunities in a variety of fields. When I was in business school, there were only a few tracks one could take among the different fields of study. Today, students have the opportunity to study a variety of topics, which is critical in helping them find the areas that interest them the most. I believe this is a critical first step in launching a successful, and enduring, career.
Advice to current & future graduate students:
There is a dearth of talent nationwide to fill positions in industries and companies that are in growth mode. Mobility isn’t the same issue it was 30 years ago. When looking to establish your career, don’t bind yourself geographically. And seek opportunities that will allow you to grow as your chosen company grows.
Personal Interests or Hobbies
Our three children occupy a lot of our free time. But as they get older and have become less reliant on us, my wife and I have started to expand our activities. We are season ticket holders for UofM football and basketball. We are also Orpheum Memphis season ticket holders.
A Fun Fact or Personal Motto
My personal motto is “Don’t take yourself too seriously. Being uptight is unhealthy.”
