Message from the Dean

Welcome back to campus, Herff family!

We are about to enter an exciting era for the Herff College of Engineering, and I am thrilled to begin my tenure here during this important time.

You need look no further to get enthusiastic about the possibilities for growth and advancement in our future than the new research and classroom building being constructed. We are positioning ourselves for more opportunities to build a bigger, better and brighter future for the college.

To launch this new chapter in our history, I will be asking for your input on innovative and creative ideas that will help us secure our earned place on the global map where we belong. We will be focusing on student success as we continue to drive the excellent quality of our programs. We will highlight the life-changing research conducted by our dedicated students and faculty, and grow our nation's technology to our advantage.

I solicit your support and patience as we turn a new chapter in Herff's history. In the coming months, you will see me walking around the complex and stopping to ask for input from faculty, staff and students. Feel free to share your thoughts, concerns and wish lists with me.

Thank you for welcoming me into the Herff community, and I look forward to getting to know each of you.

Sincerely,
Dean Okenwa Okoli

Dr. Hasan Ali, EECE, receives patent

Dr. Hasan AliSystem and method for improving transient stability of grid-connected wind generator system

Patent Number: 11509138

Abstract:
A power electronic control-based capacitor to be used at the terminal of a grid-connected wind generator system for improving the transient stability of the generator following a fault in the network. This eliminates the need of adding auxiliary control devices at the grid side. The wind generator terminal capacitor is controlled through power electronics in such a way as to function both at the steady state and transient conditions maintaining the stability of the wind generator. A power electronic control-based terminal capacitor (“C”) is connected through two back-to-back thyristor switching devices, T1 and T2. The function of the capacitor depends on the triggering or firing-angle of the thyristor switches, which varies from 0 degrees to 180 degrees.
