Acceptance of Transfer Credit
Policies for Acceptance of Transfer Credit into Engineering Technology Programs at The University of Memphis
- Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) has a published common general education core and course numbering system that includes math, natural science and social science courses. These courses are accepted for credit by all TBR institutions.
- The Engineering Technology Department accepts for credit any course taken through the Regents Online Degree Program, (TN eCampus (formerly RODP)), where the course number and prefix is identical to that offered on the main campus.
- Students with a military training transcript such as Navy Guide will have their transcript evaluated by an advisor in the Engineering Technology Department. The evaluation will be based on their Naval Enlisted Code (NEC) or Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), enlisted classification, schools attended (C-7), and 'SMART' transcript.
- The articulation agreement for engineering technology courses between Southwest Tennessee Community College (STCC) and the University of Memphis was terminated as of August 2004. STCC began designating courses in their catalog as either N (not intended for transfer) or T (intended for transfer). Transfer credit is now evaluated on a course by course basis. The Department continues to honor the articulation agreement that was in place for all courses completed prior to fall 2004.
- All courses transferred from a two-year school will be treated as lower division for purposes of determining residency requirements and can only be transferred in for 1000 or 2000 level classes.
Procedures for Validation of Transfer Credit
- Acceptance of transfer credit does not guarantee success in subsequent courses. Success in subsequent courses, grade of "C" or better, is used to validate transfer credit. Students who are not successful in the subsequent course are required to take the prerequisite course for which they requested transfer credit. This must be done prior to repeating the subsequent course in the future.
- All courses for which transfer credit is to be granted must have been forwarded to the Admissions Office and posted on the student's University of Memphis transcript.
- All courses for which transfer credit is to be granted must have been taken from a regionally accredited institution. Courses taken at proprietary schools lacking this level of accreditation will not be accepted.
Course Specific Guidelines for Evaluation of Transfer Credit
TECH 1211 Computer Programming: A beginning course in programming that emphasizes programs as the fundamental element of processes. This is only true of compiled languages. Acceptable transfer courses should have been taught using Pascal, Fortran, C, C#, or Java. Examples of languages that would be unacceptable include BASIC, Visual BASIC, any spreadsheet program such as EXCEL, any interpreted environment such as MatLab, Lisp, Mathematica or any scripting language such as php, perl, or javacript.
TECH 1411 Introduction to Technology: This course is waived for transfer students with an associates degree. It is also waived for students with transfer credit from military programs, students who transfer from engineering science, or a transfer student classified as a Junior.
TECH 1811 Electronic Circuit Technology: DC Circuits or Circuits I. A survey course in electricity/electronics covering DC circuits through series-parallel networks with introduction to AC also acceptable. Must have appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 2822 Circuit Analysis: AC Circuits, Circuits II, or Circuit Analysis. Must have appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 2821 Solid-State Technology: Courses commonly titled Electronics I or Devices I or Linear Circuits I. Acceptable transfer course should include coverage of diodes, power supplies, bipolar junction transistor biasing and typical amplifier configurations, introduction to field effect transistors. Must have appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 2831 Advanced Solid-State Technology: Courses commonly titled Electronics II or Devices II or Linear Circuits II, or Operational Amplifiers. Ideally some combination of transfer courses will satisfy topics for TECH 2821 as well as FET amplifiers and transistor amplifier frequency response characteristics and operational amplifiers. Must have appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 3811 Electronic Communications: Courses commonly titled Electronic Communications; content of transfer course should cover oscillators, AM Principles, FM Principles including modulation and demodulation. In addition, transfer course should cover signal analysis, harmonic content of waveforms (Fourier series) and should cover use of spectrum analyzer in addition to typical laboratory equipment. Must have appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 3812 Advanced Electronic Communications: Courses commonly titled Digital Communications and/or Satellite Communications. Content of transfer course should include digital communication methods and modulation techniques, methods of signal modulation, and bandwidth considerations.
TECH 3821 Industrial Electronics: Courses with similar titles or such as Process Control Systems. Content of transfer courses should include process characteristics, types and modes of process control, discrete and analog control devices, thyristors, relay ladder diagrams and control circuits. Must have appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 3822 Programmable Logic Controllers: Courses typically titled Programmable Logic Controllers or PLC I. Content to include PLC hardware, I/O addressing, timing and counting functions, data comparison instructions, computation instructions, data manipulation instructions, and file instruction concepts with appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 3841 Electrical Power and Motor Control: Courses typically titled Motor Controls or Motor Control Systems or similarly names courses. Content of prospective transfer course should include DC and AC motors, transformer theory, motor starting and control circuits, and electronic motor controls with appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 4821 Microwave Technology: Content of prospective transfer course should include transmission line theory; waveguides and resonators; microwaves tubes and semiconductor devices; microwave antennas and Smith Charts, radar systems. Must have appropriate laboratory component.
TECH 4823 Advanced Programmable Logic Controllers: Accepted in conjunction with transfer of appropriate course for TECH 3822, courses accepted for transfer are normally titled Advanced Programmable Logic Controllers or PLC II or similar. As a follow-on to first PLC course, should delve further into the application and use of the PLC for peer-to-peer processor communications, analog I/O systems, remote I/O systems, and HMI design.
