ET Prerequisite Waiver/Substitution Guidelines

Policies Regarding Course Substitutions in Engineering Technology Programs at The University of Memphis

  • All course substitutions must be approved in writing by the Program Coordinator and endorsed by the Chair.
  • The approval form must be signed and in the student's advising file prior to the student registering for the substitute course.
  • Courses taken without prior written consent may be refused as substitutes.
  • Course substitutions are made on a case by case basis. An exception made for one student does not imply an exception will be made for another student. Each student's situation is different.
  • Students are still required to meet residency requirements even if a substitute course from outside the Department is approved.
  • Transfer students: Course substitutes from prior college experience are evaluated upon admission to an Engineering Technology program.

Procedures for Approval of Course Substitutes

  • The student should request an appointment with his/her advisor to discuss the reason for a substitute and the course to be used as a substitute.
  • If the request is reasonable, the approval form should be completed and taken to the program coordinator for signature and department chair for signature.
  • Only after the signatures are secured and the form placed in the student's advising file, should the student enroll in the approved course.

Course Specific Guidelines for Substitutions

TECH 3044 Analysis for Engineering Technology: Students may use MATH 1920 Calculus II or MATH 2110 Calculus III as a substitute only if they also take PHYS 2110 and PHYS 2120 calculus based physics I and II. This substitute is made most often for military students working toward becoming a commissioned officer or engineering science students transferring into an engineering technology program.

PHYS 2010/2011 General Physics I and PHYS 2020/2021: Any student who took Applied Physics I and II from SMCC or STCC with course prefixes of PH 1119, 1129 or PHYS 1110, 1120 will be allowed to use this sequence to satisfy their Physics requirement for the B.S.E.T. this is because the catalog description for these courses required algebra or trigonometry as a co-requisite. (Approximately Spring 2003 and back into time) Any student who took Technical Physics I and II from STCC with course prefixes for PHYS 1310, 1320 will not be allowed to use this sequence to satisfy their Physics requirement for the B.S.E.T. This is because the catalog descriptions for these courses only require developmental algebra and developmental trigonometry. (Approximately Fall 2004 forward)
