Dr. Albert A. Okunade, Senior Research Fellow
Albert A. Okunade, Ph.D., is Economics Professor and faculty affiliate at the Center for Community
Health (School of Public Health), and the African & African American Studies Program
(Interdisciplinary Studies) at the University of Memphis. He Coordinates the Ph.D.
Economics program, teaches Graduate healthcare and pharmaceutical economics courses,
and supervises Ph. D. Dissertations in Applied Microeconomics including Health care.
His research honors include Suzanne Downs-Palmer Professorship, First Horizon Professorship,
Superior Performance in University Research (SPUR) and the University’s Distinguished
Research awards. The Review of Black Political Economy recently ranked him the 3rd
leading U.S. Black economist (measured by the number of published peer-refereed articles
indexed in The Journal of Economic Literature). He has authored more than 100 articles
on health care and allied specialization areas (e.g., labor) in economics and finance,
including in Journal of Health Economics, Health Economics, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Economics Letters, Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Productivity Analysis, Health Policy, Managed Care Quarterly, Health Care Management Science, Journal of Health Care Finance, and Social science & Medicine. Dr. Okunade served on the inaugural (2004-2008) Board of Trustees of The American
Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon) and on the organization’s annual Scientific
Committee. He is an active member of the international Health Economics Association
(iHEA) and has served on its annual Scientific and Strategic Planning committees.
His research is widely cited, including in The New England Journal of Medicine, Health Economics and Journal of Health Economics, among others. Professor Okunade earned Ph.D. Economics degree (1986) with a minor
in Mathematical Statistics at The University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, AR) and has
served a faculty research sabbatical at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH),
Longwood Medical Campus, Boston (MA).
