Summer 2018 Parking Update
Dear Campus Community:
I hope you are enjoying the summer and are looking forward to the fall semester. As you are probably aware, we have major projects underway that have necessitated adjustments to on-campus parking. If you have been to the south side of the campus recently, you may have noticed the progress being made on the new, general-access parking garage and land bridge. These projects will be followed closely by the construction of the Student Wellness and Fitness Center.
In preparation of the impact these projects have on parking, we increased the number of surface parking spaces in the area over the past four years. As a result of these advance initiatives, after sections of the South Lot (#15) were closed in May for the construction of the garage and land bridge, we have a net increase of 351 spaces since 2014.
In 2014, there were 2,228 general-access parking spaces south of Southern Avenue and east of Houston Street. From 2014 through 2018, we added 931 general spaces in the area (see map). The garage and land bridge construction site took the place of 580 spaces in Lot 15, where 559 new spaces had been added in 2016. Part of the increase was gained by converting the new lot (Lot 8) near South Hall from a resident, gated lot to a general-access parking lot. When the garage is completed a year from now, it will add 1,140 additional general-access spaces that will be available when construction on the Wellness and Fitness Center begins later in 2019.
As we continue to build the UofM campus of the future, we will balance our development with the demand for parking. As new projects commence, I will continue to inform you in advance of any anticipated impact on the campus environment and services. If you have any questions about parking, please contact Angela Floyd, Director of Parking and Transportation Services, at email@example.com or at 901-678-2212.
