Visiting Students

Welcome! We are happy you’re considering spending a semester with us. Here is some information to guide you through the registration process as a visiting student.

Register

After you have been admitted, register online in the myMemphis portal.

As a visiting student, you will not have an assigned advisor. Also, you will not need to be cleared by an advisor to register.

Before Classes Begin

Check your schedule and make sure it looks like you want it to. Also be sure to pay for your classes by the payment deadline. Visit University & Student Business Services (USBS) calendars for fee payment deadlines.

Transcripts

If you intend to transfer credits to your home institution, see our information about requesting an official University of Memphis transcript.

If you have any issues and need assistance while you are taking classes at UofM as a visiting student, please reach out to the Registrar’s Office at (901) 678-2810. Tiger Help Tickets

The fastest way to get help is the TigerHelp ticket system.The Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid, USBS, and other areas all respond to tickets usually within 24 hours. Please put in a ticket should you have any issues.  

Pouncer Chatbot

You can also ask the Pouncer Chatbot questions. If you log in, the chatbot can pull your student record information and give you personalized answers.

FAQs

Here are answers to some of the most common questions and concerns visiting student have. 

Online sections generally are identified by section numbers that start with either M (UofM) or R (TN eCampus). Also, you can try limiting your course search results to an Instructional Method of Web or Web-Asynchronous (depending on which look up tool you are using) and the TN eCampus/Web option for your student level. 

As a visiting student, your transfer work may not be entered into our student record system when you are admitted. This means that you will need to work with the UofM department offering the course you want to take. The staff in the department offering the course can review your transcript from your home institution to determine if you have met the required pre-requisites. If so, they will issue you a permit, and then you can register for the class you want to take.

If a course is full and waitlisting is available for that course, you will be able to add yourself to the waitlist. If a space opens in the course for you, you will receive an email, and you will have 24 hours to register yourself in the course. If you do not register within that 24-hour period, the space goes to the next person on the waitlist. For more specifics about the waitlist, see our page on Waitlisting.
