ALEKS

To better ensure student success, the University of Memphis requires a placement assessment for math known as ALEKS. Because students are admitted with a wide variety of strengths and backgrounds in mathematics, it is reasonable to expect that there will be various levels of readiness among students.

The ALEKS Placement Assessment covers material from Basic Math through Pre-calculus and will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. After the initial assessment, a Prep and Learning Module is available for students to review and learn material. The Prep and Learning Module is individualized for each student based on the results of their initial placement.

The ALEKS assessment is free of charge and can be accessed by logging into the myMemphis portal. Students receive 5 assessments and up to 6 months in the Prep and Learning Module. The second assessment may be started 48 hours after the first assessment; however, we encourage students to spend several hours in the Prep and Learning Module before taking the second assessment. Students must work in the Prep and Learning Module a minimum of 3 hours between each of the remaining three assessments.

All students are strongly encouraged to spend several hours using the ALEKS Prep and Learning Module. Even if students achieved placement in their desired course, time spent in ALEKS will better prepare them for their upcoming course and ultimately lead to better grades.
