Biography

Overton is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a native Memphian.  He graduated first in his class with an MBA - concentration in Finance from the University of Memphis in 1982, and earned his Batchelor of Science Degree in General Business from the University of Tennessee in 1980. 

Business experience includes:

19 years as an Equity Securities Analyst, primarily with Morgan Keegan (since acquired by Raymond James), as well as a short visit (1997-1998) as an Equity Analyst with J.C. Bradford & Co. in Nashville, TN (since acquired by Prudential Securities, which was later acquired by Wachovia Securities, now a division of Bank of America). (1987-2009)

Industry expertise as an Equity Securities Analyst was primarily in Lodging and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), including Multi-family, Office, Lodging and Retail REITs.  Additional research coverage included Poultry processing, Casino Entertainment, Furniture manufacturing and retailing, Fabric, Supermarket and Drug store retailing, and Manufactured housing.

Managing Director in Investment Banking for First Horizon Corporation (now First Horizon) (2000-2001).

5 years with Holiday Corporation (and its predecessor Holiday Inns, Inc.) as a Planning Analyst and Manager of Financial Planning in Hotel Group Strategic Planning (1982-1985) and as Manager of Financial Planning in the Corporate Treasury (1985-1987).

Teaching

Full-time Instructor since the fall of 2010.  Teaching experience includes:

  • FIR 3410 - Financial Management
  • FIR 3710 - Investments
  • FIR 3720 - Financial Markets and Institutions

Service

Faculty advisor for the University of Memphis for the annual CFA Challenge competition, in which a team of students takes on the role of securities analyst in preparing a a research report on a publicly-traded company, and presenting the findings to a group of local investment professionals who are Chartered Financial Analysts.  

Honors program coordinator for the department of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate.

Board Member - Chartered Financial Analyst Society, Memphis

Board Member - Serenity Recovery Centers of Memphis.

Board Member - Development Foundation for Small Group Ministries.
