About Carol Irwin
Carol Irwin, PhD joined the University of Memphis in August of 2007 and currently is a professor in our Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program. Dr. Irwin earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from University of Northern Colorado, and both an master's in sport pedagogy and doctorate in curriculum and instruction-health education from Kent State University. At the University of Memphis, Dr. Irwin teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in methods of teaching, curriculum and urban issues involving health and physical education. She has spent over twenty years in the P-12 schools across the U.S., specifically in Colorado, Minnesota, Ohio and Tennessee. Prior to her tenure at the UofM, she was the curriculum coordinator for health, physical education and lifetime wellness for Memphis City Schools. Currently, Dr. Irwin is the principal investigator for the USA Swimming research study, "Constraints Impacting Minority Swimming Participation." This nationwide study was the first research to determine minority youth swimming ability, and to dig deeper to explore possible reasons why these under served populations drown at such high rates.
