Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a broad field that focuses on improving health through the integrated use of engineering, biology and medical principles. For example, biomedical engineers are involved in: designing new implants for those who suffer from hip fractures; developing medical devices for sensing electrical signals to detect heart problems; developing technologies to visualize and detect disease or tissue function non-invasively; and growing tissues/organs to repair or replace those lost to disease or injury. Biomedical engineers work in industry, in hospitals, in research labs (at academic, corporate, government, and non-profit institutions), and at regulatory agencies (to help ensure that devices and technologies are safe and effective). Our program has a strong record of job placement after graduation: approximately 55% of our students find positions working in industry, 30% go on to pursue a graduate degree, and 10% go on to medical, dental, veterinary, optometry, or other professional programs.

Engineering Technology
Engineering Technology is all about using and understanding the equipment and concepts
to implement engineering
designs—the machines, computers and code that bridge the gap between ideas and reality.
Engineering technologists
work with robotics, computerized machine tools and welding. They also use plasma cutters
and lasers. ET encompasses tons of areas within engineering, like networking, databases,
project management, quality and processes. Want to work within manufacturing, distribution
and logistics? Then engineering technology may be your field.
Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering
The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Memphis combines the resources of a major research university with the support of a close-knit community. Within the Herff College of Engineering, students gain hands-on experience, work alongside expert faculty, and tackle real-world challenges—from building resilient infrastructure to protecting the environment. Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineers contribute to society and economy in many areas—energy, manufacturing, transportation systems, defense, aerospace, robots and unmanned vehicles, air-conditioning and refrigeration, medical devices and many others. In other words, the majority of the products you use every single day are all made possible by mechanical engineers. Nearly 20 percent of the nearly 3 million engineers in the United States are mechanical engineers. All those cool things you read about, like establishing colonies on the moon and Mars, 3-D printing of biomedical implants or building the next-generation aircraft and automobile engines. They're all happening right here at Herff. Build medical devices. Create renewable energy systems—wind and solar. Design and test new aerospace engines and propulsion systems. Get your feet wet testing turbines in the Mississippi River. The possibilities are endless.

At the Polytechnic@UofM, we offer non-traditional students a path to degrees that can immediately make a difference in their lives. Designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in high-need industries, the Polytechnic provides all students with accessible, transfer-friendly and experience-recognizing degree options that translate directly into career success.
Herff to Bermuda
Nearly 1,500 miles away but connected by a common goal, the Herff College of Engineering is the only university with an articulation agreement with Bermuda College for Engineering. Students in Bermuda can finish their associate's degree and transfer those credits directly to the Herff College of Engineering to complete their bachelor's degree in the engineering field of their interest. Together, the Herff College of Engineering and the Bermuda College for Engineering are making an impact on an ever-changing world.
