UofM Will Host Symposium on Folk Art Nov. 7

October 30, 2015 - The University of Memphis Department of Art will host a symposium Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon in room 250 of the Art and Communication Building, 3715 Central Ave. The symposium is part of The Folk Art Society of America at Longwood Center (FASA@LCVA) for the Visual Arts annual conference Nov. 5-8 at the Peabody Hotel. The symposium is free and open to the public.

FASA@LCVA is a national nonprofit that advocates the documentation, preservation and exhibition of folk art, folk artists and folk art environments with an emphasis on the contemporary. Featured speakers will be Jack Soden, president and CEO of Elvis Presley Enterprises, who will discuss "Behind the Scenes at Graceland;" David Evans, professor and director of the Ethnomusicology/Regional Studies Program at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, who will examine and perform "Memphis and Mid-South Blues, Gospel and Folk Music;" Judith McWillie, professor emerita at the Lamar Dodd School or Art at the University of Georgia; and Washington James Harris, master of the Saint Paul Spiritual Holy Temple in Memphis, who will consider "A Sign for All Mankind and the Fallen of the World."

Parking in the Central Avenue parking lot is free to the public on Saturdays. Parking is also available in the Fogelman Drive garage for $2 per hour. The garage is handicap accessible. Free handicap parking is available in the narrow lot off Central and west of the Art and Communication Building.
