Memphis in May: UofM Welcomes Professors from Czech Republic May 10

May 9, 2018 - The University of Memphis is partnering with Memphis in May International Festival to host Dr. Hana Sychrova, president of the Council for International Affairs of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Vladimir Kral, head of one of the Research Groups at BIOCEV, on Thursday, May 10. The goal is to help researchers in Memphis establish long-term partnerships and engage in collaborative research. The presentations are open to the public.

The University will provide an opportunity for interested individuals to learn more about the Czech Academy of Sciences and BIOCEV through public presentations at the FedEx Institute of Technology, room 225.

• From 9-10 a.m., Sychrova will give an overview of the structure, research priorities/strategy
and potential for collaboration with the Czech Academy of Sciences.
• From 10 -11 a.m., Kral will discuss the structure, core facilities and research interests of
BIOCEV.

Afternoon sessions will feature presentations from 18 UofM research teams identified as opportunities for collaborative research. The group will also visit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and participate in several Memphis in May sponsored cultural activities.

The Czech Academy of Sciences and its 54 member institutes are conducting basic research in a broad spectrum of the natural, technical and social sciences and the humanities in order to advance scientific knowledge of global and national significance. The Academy also fosters collaboration with applied research and industry as well as joint international research projects and scholarly exchanges.

BIOCEV is a joint project of six institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the faculties of Science and Medicine at Charles University in Prague. There are five primary areas of research at BIOCEV: Functional Genomics, Cellular Biology and Virology, Structural Biology and Protein Engineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, and Development of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures.
