Tier III Policy: Limited Usage

Regardless of changes in technology, students will always be required to think critically and independently, whether in English or a foreign language. For this reason, this class takes the approach that all use of text-generating AI models is strictly not allowed for any assignments and under all circumstances relating to this class, unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

Appropriate Uses of AI

This class is not concerned with developing ethical uses of AI, and this instructor may have reservations about whether such a thing exists, given the unprecedented ecological, economic, and/or political impact of this technology. Students may make their own choices about these technologies on their own time, but they may not use them for this class. All uses of Large Language Models for completion of any work in this class constitute a violation of the syllabus policy that will be met with consequences.

Consequences of Misuse

Because Tier III does not allow use of AI under any circumstances, any use related to this class will result in significant consequences:

  • Students using AI will be subject to academic misconduct procedures and may be reported to the Office of Student Accountability.
  • Claiming AI-generated work as one’s own, or using AI in ways not aligned with course policy, will lead to academic consequences, which may include failure of the assignment or course.
