Discovering Architecture + Design Program
The Architecture + Design Summer Program is an exciting two week day camp program
developed for high school students who are interested in learning more about the art
and science of design. The program is jointly sponsored by the Department of Architecture
at the University of Memphis and the Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects.
The Architecture + Design Summer Program operates from 9:00am until 2:00pm, Monday
through Friday. The program is structured around a variety of activities including
an introduction to architectural and structural concepts, computer applications, model
building, and freehand drawing. The program of study also includes visits to architecture
and design firms, and an architectural tour of downtown Memphis. Local architects,
designers, landscape architects, and other design professionals serve as guest lecturers.
A variety of special demonstrations and films are also offered.
Participants work one-on-one and in groups with University instructors and design
professionals in the studios and classrooms of the Department of Architecture. Beginning
with basic design problems, the program experience culminates with the presentation
of student projects including both architectural drawings and models. Students who
successfully complete the Architecture + Design Summer Program receive a certificate
after they present their work to a professional jury, family and friends on the second
Saturday from 9:00am to noon. Projects completed in camp may be used in a portfolio
for application to architecture and design schools.
