Emergency Information

 

Procedure for Calling Campus Police

  1. Dial 911, call 901.678.HELP (901.678.4347) or use the red help phone to contact the campus police.
  2. Give your name, location (Student Recreation and Sports Complex, 620 Echles Street or R. Brad Martin Student Wellness Center, 3735 Southern Ave.) and the specific location within the building, and a description of what has occurred requiring emergency attention. Always give the location where you will meet the officers.
  3. Immediately notify the supervisor on duty of the situation and any action you have taken.
  4. Meet the police at the location you specified.
  5. Fill out an incident report form and file it with the Campus Recreation office. Please be as specific as possible.

Procedure for Calling to Report a Life-Threatening Emergency

  1. If someone is injured, do not attempt to move them.
  2. Dial 911 or use the red help phone to contact the campus police.
  3. Give your name, location (Student Recreation and Sports Complex and specific location within the building where you are located), and a description of the injury. Always give the location where you will meet the officer.
  4. Immediately notify the supervisor on duty of the situation and any action you have taken.
  5. Meet the ambulance at the location you specified.
  6. Fill out an injury report form and file it with the Campus Recreation office.

Procedures for Severe Weather

Tornado

If Indoors:

  1. Move quickly to a safe interior area without windows (e.g., hallways, basements, restrooms).
  2. Move to the lowest levels using stairways, NOT elevators.
  3. If possible, close all doors as you leave an area.
  4. Stay away from windows, doors and exterior walls.
  5. Do NOT go outdoors.

If Outdoors:

  1. Get inside if possible.
  2. Stay away from trees, power lines, utility poles and other hazards.
  3. Curl up in a ditch or low-lying area; stay low to the ground; use your arms to protect your head and neck.

Earthquake

  1. Drop, cover and hold under a table or desk or against an inside wall, not in a doorway, until the shaking stops.
  2. After the shaking stops, check yourself and others for injuries and move toward the nearest exit or alternate exit.
  3. Evacuate the building.
  4. Do not leave the area/campus without reporting your status to your instructor or supervisor.

Earthquake Survival

Fire

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station and call 911 or 4357/HELP from a campus phone; call 911 from a cell phone; or if available in the lobby, use the red emergency phone.
  3. Evacuate the building.
  4. Do NOT use elevators!
  5. Do NOT enter the building until authorized by emergency personnel.

Hazardous Materials

  1. If an emergency exists or if anyone is in danger, move away from the site of the hazard to a safe location.
  2. Follow the instructions of emergency personnel.
  3. Alert others to stay clear of the area.
  4. Notify emergency personnel if you have been exposed or have information about the release.

Power Outage

  1. Remain calm; provide assistance to others if necessary.
  2. Move cautiously to a lighted area. Exits may be indicated by lighted signs if the emergency power is operating.
  3. Turn off and unplug computers and other voltage sensitive equipment.
  4. For information about a prolonged outage, call Physical Plant at 901.678.2075.

Evacuation

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Evacuate using the nearest safe stairs and safe exit.
  3. Do NOT use elevators!
  4. Gather personal belongings (medication, keys, purses, wallets, etc.), but only if safe to do so.
  5. Follow directions given by emergency personnel.
  6. Go to identified assembly points at least 500 feet from the affected building.
  7. Assist persons with disabilities or injuries without jeopardizing your safety.
  8. If you are unable to evacuate due to a physical disability, go to a safe location (e.g., stairwell) and wait for assistance.
  9. Ask others to inform emergency personnel of your location.

If There is Time:

  1. Turn off all electronics, including computers (except in cases of leaking gas or other flammable substances).
  2. Secure any hazardous materials or equipment before leaving.
